Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about Co-oto and private carsharing.
General Carsharing Principles
Is the vehicle covered in case of an accident?
Co-oto does not offer insurance partnerships. Users must check with their respective insurance companies before sharing a vehicle, as conditions vary by country and context. A detailed article about carsharing insurance is available on our blog for Swiss users.
General App Information
What are the different carsharing modes available?
Co-oto offers three modes: "Vehicle Lending" (an owner lends their car to borrowers), "Logbook" (multiple co-owners share costs), and "Rental" (for peer-to-peer rentals). Discover the 3 modes in detail →
Is Co-oto a paid application?
The app offers a free version with a maximum of 5 trips per month. To unlock all features, owners must subscribe to a monthly subscription (pricing varies by country and platform). Borrowers use the application for free.
How does the free trial period work?
When a second user joins your carsharing circle, you automatically get 30 days of access to all premium features. After this period, you can continue with the free version or subscribe.
What are the different subscriptions available?
Co-oto offers two subscriptions: "Family" (up to 3 users plus the owner, unlimited trips) and "Pro" (up to 10 users plus the owner, unlimited trips). Both include all features: chat, geolocation, exports, recurring reservations, and fixed costs.
How does the reservation system work?
Borrowers reserve the vehicle through a shared calendar by indicating desired dates and times. The owner can enable manual validation of reservations. The application automatically signals conflicts between users' time slots.
What types of vehicles are supported?
The application was designed for gasoline vehicles. Most features are also available for electric cars.
Can I find a carsharing partner with Co-oto?
No, Co-oto allows you to manage carsharing between people who already know each other. There is no matching platform.
Does Co-oto work offline?
No, an internet connection is required to use the application. Data is synchronized in real-time between all users in the carsharing circle.
Cost Sharing
How does cost sharing work?
Co-oto automatically calculates costs based on distance traveled and the pricing set by the owner. Fixed costs (insurance, leasing, etc.) can also be distributed monthly. Learn more about cost sharing →
Which currencies does Co-oto support?
The main European currencies are available: Euro, Swiss franc, Scandinavian currencies, Eastern European currencies, Turkish lira, and Canadian dollar.
What is the difference between a reservation and a recorded trip?
A reservation blocks a calendar slot to use the vehicle. A recorded trip calculates the borrower's costs based on distance traveled. Only the trip is charged, not the reservation.
What happens in case of overlapping reservations?
The application signals calendar conflicts. The owner validates or refuses each reservation (this system can be enabled/disabled). The borrower can delete their reservation from the app.
How are monthly fixed costs managed?
The owner can set fixed costs (insurance, leasing, depreciation, parking, etc.) that are automatically distributed among users each month. This feature is available with paid subscriptions.
How do I record a fuel refill?
Fuel refills can be added at any time from the application. The app automatically calculates the distribution of fuel costs among users based on their consumption.
How do I track user expenses?
The "Statement" tab displays an expense summary. In "Vehicle Lending" mode, you see how much each borrower owes the owner. In "Logbook" mode, you see what each user has spent.
Can I share an electric car with Co-oto?
Yes, you can use Co-oto with an electric vehicle by setting a cost per kilometer. However, the application does not specifically manage electric charging costs. For electricity costs, you can use the monthly fixed costs feature.
Can I export my trip data?
Yes, with a paid subscription, you can export your data in Excel format to get detailed history of trips and costs.
Roles, Users and Accounts
How do I change profile and switch from "Owner" to "Borrower"?
It is not possible to exchange roles within the same contract. You can terminate or leave your contract and choose a new role without recreating an account.
How do I invite a new user?
From the "Users" tab, the owner can generate an invitation code to share. The invitee downloads the application, creates an account, and enters the code to join the carsharing circle.
How long is an invitation valid?
The invitation code expires after 14 days. If the deadline passes, the owner can generate a new code from the application.
Can users cheat by entering false data?
The application works with data entered by users, without external tracking. Accuracy depends heavily on user honesty. Trust is essential. Photos of receipts can document expenses.
What is the maximum number of users per carsharing?
An owner can manage up to 3 vehicles (depending on the plan), each with up to 10 borrowers.
Is it possible to participate in multiple carsharing circles with a single account?
No, currently a borrower can only participate in one carsharing circle.
Can you have multiple owners for the same vehicle?
Yes, multiple people can record trips and share costs by selecting the "Logbook" mode when creating the account.
